Watch this video from This Old House to learn different brick patterns.

Steps:

1 A running-bond pattern is easy to install and requires cutting bricks only at beginning of walkway and at end; the seams are staggered by half of a brick.

2 The bricks in a cross-bond pattern run 90 degrees to the walkway, making it ideal for short walkways; bricks must be cut in every other row.

3 No bricks are cut for a basket-weave pattern; the bricks are set in alternating right-angle pairs.

4 The stylish herringbone pattern requires cutting bricks at the beginning and at every third row.

5 Use modular bricks for basket weave and herringbone patterns; the brick's length equals twice its width.

6 Standard bricks are best for running bond and cross bond patterns because the brick's length is longer than width of two bricks.
